Chruch vs State?

Two little words "Under God" have started off a firestorm across the Nation.

Let's keep the conversation going. A point/counter-point if you will.

I need participants, so if you want to join the fray, and can make educated, literate arguments and stand toe-to-toe with like-minded individuals, then e-mail me or post a comment with a valid e-mail.

Let's get the fire started!

My girlfriend came downtown to have lunch with me, and all I did was rant about this. She said it seems like something I should get involved in because I'm so damn passionnate about the issue. Mind if I join? Posted by: Etoile on June 28, 2002 03:21 PM

why should people care if the plegde says "under God" none of us would be here if it was not for God almighty. I think personly, if you don't want to say it then dont. Because I think its the non-americans that have something to do with this conflict and its just not the non-americans that have a promblem with saying "under God" its also the non-believers also. just my opinion!!!!! I'm doing a report on chruch and state laws, and the debat over the whole deal so if you could please send me some information to inform the class that the chruch has just as much right as the state does.(Religious Freedom) I would greatly appreciast it. Thank you very much, GOD BLESS AND JESUS ROCKS! Josh 10th grade Goreville High School Posted by: Joshua on December 3, 2003 01:37 PM
Interesting subject. Were I stand well this country was founded by people getting away from a government that controled the church. The seperation of church and state was to keep the government out of the church not God out of our country. Note in 1962 when the Supreme Court ruled no prayer in school our country has become more and more depraved, immoral, and just plain dark. Posted by: Chuck on June 8, 2004 11:20 AM
PERSONALLY I THINK AND BELIEF THAT GOD IS THE MAIN POINT OF EVERYTHING. JUST THINK, IF IT WEREN'T FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO ESCAPED PERSECUTION FOR BEING PROTESTANT THIS NATION WOULDN'T BE WHAT IT IS. THIS NATION IS WHAT IT IS BECAUSE OF THOSE PEOPLE AND BY TAKING AWAY THAT WORD YOU ARE TAKING AWAY HISTORY. YOU ARE TAKING AWAY THE ROOTS FOR THE BUILDING OF THIS NATION. MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU ALL. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH CHUCK, HE HAS A VERY INTERESTING POINT THERE. IT IS TRUE WHAT HE SAYS. THEY'RE TAKING AWAY THE LITTLE THINGS THAT PRAISE THE LORD AND THAT IS CAUSING OURSELF DESTRUCTION. JUST TAKE A SECOND AND REFLECT WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NOW AND FIFTY YEARS AGO WHEN PRAYER WAS ALLOWED IN SCHOOLS. I AM NOT SAYING TO FORCE THIS RULES WHAT I AM SAYING IS THAT THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PRAISE THE LORD AND YOU ARE DENING THE PLEASURE OF DOING THAT TO THOSE PEOPLE. JUST THINK, ARE DOES THOSE WORDS THAT ARE IN OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM REALLY BOTHER YOU? STOP AND THINK, ARE THE WORDS REALLY A BIG DEAL TO ME OR IS IT THAT I JUST WANT AN ISSUE TO DISCUSS ABOUT? JUST THINK THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHER THINGS IN THIS WORLD MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN DISCUSSING AN ISSUE LIKE THIS. Posted by: ALEJANDRA on September 10, 2004 05:13 PM

I'm in high school, and my class is doing a moot court on the subject of "under God" in the pledge, so I would appreciate some info also. As for where I stand - I am a Christian and I do appreciate the fact that at present time we are allowed to say "under God" in our pledge. However, our country is supposed to be accepting an inclusive of all races, religions, etc. Even though school children (and others, for that matter) are not forced to say the pledge, it is highly incouraged and most people do. This makes other young children feel left out and excluded. They may also be judged by their peers. I know from experience: I was close friends with a Jehovah's Witness, and she didn't participate in the pledge. Some kids talked about how weird she was behind her back and wouldn't be her friend because of it. Now, if we take the words under God out of the pledge, we are still free to praise the Lord in many other ways, thanks to out great country. And I'm sure that atheists will be a bit more willing to listen to others who attempt to convert them if they don't feel forced to say those words in our pledge.
